Fox News Canada

The CBC has finally hit rock bottom.

Tonight, as The National's "At Issue" panel discussed the recent "scolding" of Prime Minister Harper by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, the caption at the bottom of the screen read: "Beatdown in Beijing."

Later on the broadcast, Rex Murphy used the so-called "Climategate" scandal as a springboard to once again rail against "global warming players," "climate politics," and "professional environmentalists."

Perhaps their trying to appeal to Harper enough to save their skins. Sad to see.

I can understand the complaint about the infotainment-style sensationalism of the beatdown caption... but Rex? Everybody loves Rex.

I heard that editorial out of the corner of my ear while I was doing something else but didn't think it was too over the top. I mean, Rex always exaggerates issues and takes a strong position for that segment because it is clearly editorial and not trying to be pure news.

It is an important issue for big media outlets like the CBC to cover. I've seen a lot of coverage on the interwebs, but that's the only mention of it I remember seeing on TV or radio.

I think this was the point Rex was trying to make, or maybe it's just my own point and I only took from Rex what I wanted to, but... Climate change science, like all science, has to be challenged openly if we want to be sure of its truth and validity. It's extremely dangerous for any scientific theory (whether it's climate change, evolution, creationism, geocentrism, or whatever) to be transformed into a political theory that refuses to change in the face of new information, and that actively tries to suppress contrary information.

Climate change is a big issue that has become an article of faith for some people, many of whom I'm sure have the best intentions. I'm sure there are also plenty of people who see how the fight against climate change will serve their own selfish interests, and don't really care about the big picture. Whatever their motivations, people who treat a scientific theory as untouchable are just as bad as the deniers who will treat a scientific theory as worthless no matter how much evidence there is in its favour.

Nobody's going to be served well by suppressing data which doesn't fit in with the officially approved theory. At worst, it leads us away from the truth. At best, it gives more fuel to the deniers to say "we knew it was a scam all along!" and that can have an impact on the attitudes of the honest skeptics or uninformed, which is probably the majority of people.

Even though we're not at the bottom of these emails yet, it looks like there was enough fishy stuff going on that shouldn't have been going on if people were doing their jobs properly. The railing is a necessary part of responding to the issue, and it's a useful reminder that you have to call fouls against your own team, not just the other guys.

Oh, and on the scolding issue, what's with the Liberals' response to it?

The reason there's been a cooling between China and Canada is because the Conservatives have taken a principled stand on China's human rights violations. The stand may not have been effective in changing China's behaviour, but it's hard to fault the Conservatives for making an effort. Aren't the Liberals supposed to be the party that cares about human rights and the little guy? And aren't the Conservatives supposed to be the mean ones who pursue economic gain at any cost?

I used to think Ignatieff, as an academic, would be good for the Liberals and help them to take principled positions. But he seems to be trying to play the political advantage on every point, no matter what the reasonable position is. At least Martin and Dion would take principled positions contrary to what their advisors would tell them about the political ramifications, like they did with the sponsorship scandal inquiry and the carbon tax.

ps. I heart Andrew Coyne

Thanks for your thoughts, JTho. But I think you give Rex, Martin and Dion too much credit.

I probably am giving Rex and Martin too much credit. Dion though, he seemed so clueless and politically naive that I think he really was trying to take principled positions, at least until the election.
